Hepatic Encephalopathy

Hepatic Encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome caused by liver disease. This disease is thought to be due to biochemical disturbance of brain function because it is reversible and does not cause marked pathological changes in the brain. Liver failure and portsystematic shunting of blood are the two important factors underlying hepatic encephalopathy and the balance between these varies for different patients. The clinical features include changes of intellect, personality, emotions and consciousness, with or without neurological signs. This disease can be managed by taking lactulose is a disaccharide which is taken orally. Neomycin is an antibiotic which help in reducing the bacterial content in the body.
