Gynaecomastia is a disease which results from an imbalance between androgen and estrogen activity, which may reflect androgen and estrogen activity. The most common are physiological, i.e. in the newborn baby, in puberty boys and in elderly men. It can be investigated by taking blood sample for testosterone. If puberty does not proceed in harmonious manner, hence there may be an underlying abnormality that requires investigation. Features of hypogonadism should be sought and the tests examined for evidence of any tumors. There are various surgical approaches which include small incision around the nipple. Androgen replacement will usually improve this disease and other causes should be addressed if possible.
